Today was a nothing kind of day. The weather is pretty lousy, not the catastrophic storm as predicted but cold, wet & windy. Some people here have said that the foul weather is due to the fact that the Prime Minister is on the island to open a new road that’s taken two years to construct. So the story goes, this Prime Minister is jinxed & everywhere he goes things go wrong. He was supposed to be going to Turkey just as they had earthquakes & yesterday we got the weather alert on our phones, which I gather is unusual for here. Apparently his wife won’t travel with him 😵‍💫

I went to have my nails done, ate breakfast of pancakes with banana & honey & downed my coffee & then I came home to lie in bed & read all day whilst the wind blew outside the window. I did meet a couple of English ladies at the cafe who have been coming here for 25 years. People have said that this island gets into your blood & that certainly appears to be true when you consider how many of the travellers are return visitors.

They were talking about the years when the refugees started arriving & how at one point they saw a man with his wife & children travelling along the road. The man was pushing his children in a wheelie bin…bit of a sobering image to take on at breakfast. Anyway I walked home & had a lazy day which was easy to do due to the weather & honestly a bit of a luxury, not something I would do at home.

I am having dinner with Maria & Aris tonight. She is making a traditional soup with meatballs in, so I’m looking forward to that. I really must try doing some cooking of my own next week. I’ve been a bit slack in that department! I will have the car, so it’s easier to get inspired when you don’t have to lug groceries home in a backpack.

Just got home from dinner which turned out to be something called Γιουβαρλάκι & is a soup type of affair made with, in this instance, celery, carrot & meatballs. The broth part is thickened with eggs & lemon juice & a little rice. It is most definitely comfort food, warm & filling. We ate it with thick slices of bread used to soak up the broth & followed it up with home made sponge chocolate cake, yum!

We also had a small glass of Maria’s Paradise welcome drink which is home made pomegranate juice, sugar, cinnamon & brandy. Another comforting type of offering which they have as a shot & I think would be lovely over ice in summer. By 9.30 I was ready for bed, an early night by Greek standards so I am off to bed with my book.

Hopefully the weather clears up tomorrow & I can go for a long walk.
